OK. Listen up. You are going to have to pay attention to this review because Top Trumps – World Football Stars is possibly one of the most complicated online slot games that I have played. Thats not to say that its bad, because it isn’t, but I can pretty much guarantee that there will be times when you have to flick on to the paytable to work out why you won!

Lets start with the simple bits first. This is a 5 reel online slot game with 15 win lines. You can set how many lines that you want to play and how much you want to wager per line by toggling the buttons at the bottom of the play area. Once you are happy with your settings then you are ready to play.

There are seven World Cup teams available and you start by picking a home and an away team. These teams are Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Choosing these teams will change the reel symbols so that they show players from that team on the reels. As you can imagine, the main thrust of the game is to match these symbols on the win lines to win money. If you want to, you can change either the home or away team at any time by clicking on the flags at the top of the playing area.

Now when you play this is where it gets a little complicated – your home team symbols pay out from left to right on the reels, but your away team pay out from right to left on the reels! This can lead to some serious eye strain as you have to check both ways for your wins – but help is at hand; if you get confused, just click on the info screen and any wins you have had for that spin will be highlighted on the paytable.

Now, having the symbols pay out in both directions is a good thing, as you have more chances to win, but if you thought that was complicated enough – thats nothing. If you get 5 reel symbols showing players from the same team EVEN IF THEY ARENT THE SAME SYMBOL you will win. Thats another thing to strain your eyes to!

As the name suggests, card trading game Top Trumps have had some input into this online slot, and their name appears as the Scatter symbol. Get 2-5 of these anywhere on the reels and you will win between 1-125x your line stake.

There is also a football symbol that appears on reels 2 and 4. If you get the symbol appearing on reel 2 and there is a home team player immediately to the left on reel 1 then you start the bonus round. Well, I say bonus round – technically it is, but it plays on the existing reels so its not a bonus round in the way that you would expect.

When you trigger this round the ball from reel two will move off its position and move between each home team player on the reels. Each time it hits a player you will get 3x your total bet for the spin. So if your total bet is £15, and you have 4 home team players on the reels then you win £60. Simple? Yes.

However, if you get the ball symbol spinning in on reel 4 and there is an away team player immediately to the right in reel 5, then the same thing happens again except that you play right to left with your away team players that are on the reels. Phew!

Finally, there are team flags that appear on reels 1 and 5. They are the team flags for whichever teams you are playing with at the time. If you match the same flag on reels 1 and 5 then you start the Free Spins.

Your free spins take place in the same way as usual, but your wins pay out from left to right AND right to left in some situations. To be honest, if you get the Free Spins you might as well just sit tight and wait for the round to finish to see how much you win – you’ll never work out all the win combinations that happen during your Free Spins!
