I have to admit that theming an online slot game around the oppression of women in the Far East is a little odd – after all, when we play online slots its for entertainment and we choose the game that we play based not only on the number of lines and features that the game has but also the theme and graphical content.

Having said that, Geisha Story is a well designed game, although a little “pink” for me. The reel symbols all represent typical images that we expect to see from this part of history – lotus flowers, koi carp, bonsai trees, little tea cups etc – all combining to give this online slot a very feminine feel.

Once you have used the buttons at the bottom of the playing area to set the number of lines that you want to play and the amount that you wish to wager per line then its time to press the Spin button and start playing. For those of you who like to use the Autoplay feature, there is one in Geisha Story, but it is hidden away (clicking on the Menu option at the bottom of the screen will allow you to access it).

Matching symbols on the reels is the aim of the game and you can win between 5 and 750x your line bet depending on how many and which type of reels you match. This is a little stingy, as some online slot machines, even 15 winline ones, will pay out 10000x your line bet at the top end.

There are a couple of bonus symbols that can appear of the reels to help you generate line wins.  The Scatter symbol is a wizened old man – a stereotypical image that kind of fits the feel of the game – and getting three or more of him will give you a win of between 5 and 50x your line bet. Again, this is a little stingy – if you get 5 Scatter symbols you only get 50x you line bet; personally I think it should be much more.

There is also a Wild Symbol and in Geisha Story this is the young Japanese male. He’ll substitute for all other symbols apart from the Wild Symbol and the Bonus Symbol and help you to make up wins. Unfortunately these wins are paid out at the standard paytable rate, which again is a little disappointing.

The final bonus symbol is the Geisha herself. She only appears on Reels 1 and 5, but if you manage to spin her in on those reels then you will trigger the Bonus Round.

You get taken to two screen before you start the bonus round. In the first one you are asked to select one of 6 fans. Clicking on a fan will reveal a number. This is the number of Free Spins that you will get.

The next screen is identical only this time the number that you reveal behind the fan that you click on is your win multiplier. Once you have selected the number of Free Spins and the Win Multiplier then you start those spins.

Sadly, the Free Spin screen is identical to the main game screen, meaning that you don’t really get fully immersed into the game. Once you finish your Free Spins the game just carries on as normal – you wont even feel like you’ve been in a bonus round to be honest.

The final thing that Geisha Story has is the Dollar Ball option. If you wish, you can activate this by pressing the button at the top of the screen. This will activate the randomly paid Progressive Jackpot, which seems set at $10000. Each spin where you play for the Dollar Ball progressive jackpot will cost you a dollar on top of your usual spin bet. Whether you think its worth paying the extra on the hope that you might win this is up to you…

Geisha Story isn’t a bad online slot game – indeed it has all the features that you would expect of a slot with more win lines, but it just feels lazily thought out and the lack of small things like a feeling of change for the bonus round, or a higher win multiplier for the Scatters make me feel that this online slot is seen as a “filler” game as opposed to a game that people would actively seek out.
