Regular readers of this site will know that I’m not really a fan of dubiously themed online slot games (give me a film title or superhero based slot any time), so when I was tasked to review Penguin Vacation one of the other guys in the office said that I had a face like I was sucking a lemon. Anyway, I fired up the game on my trusty laptop and do you know what – its absolutely brilliant!

The first thing that strikes you is the graphics. There’s been a lot of care and attention to make this game look as good as possible, and the designers have certainly achieved that with a nice clear gaming area and beautifully animated reel characters. Getting a win has never looked so pretty, as the characters all perform their own little party piece for you.
The game itself is a standard 5 reel online slot with 20 winlines and a few bonus features, but like Desert Treasure (and probably Cleopatra as well), its the gameplay that set this apart from other online slot games.

You start by choosing the number of lines that you want to play and then selecting how much you want to wager per line. As this game has a Scatter win that allows you to access the free spin round you should always play all 20 lines – just adjust your line bet so that you are playing within your budget.
Pressing the Spin buttons starts the game, and as is normal the idea is to match the same symbol on a winline to generate your money. Unusually for an online slot game, Penguin Vacation has 4 different reel symbols that allow you to win if you only get 2 of a kind – most games mean that you have to get at least three of a kind.

To help you win more, there is also a Stackable Wild symbol that spins in. When it does, instead of just occupying the one reel position, it can (and often does) expand across all three reel positions to give you more of a chance to win. These Stackable Wilds can also help to give you multiple line wins – unlike the slot machines that you might find in a pub, online slot games play like their real life casino counterparts – if you have wins on more than one winline then you win all of them, not just the highest single win. Additionally, any win that you generate that involves the use of a Wild symbol will pay out at double the usual rate – nice!

If you manage to get three of more “Ice Fishing” symbols anywhere on the reels, not only will you get a healthy Scatter win bonus, but you will also trigger the Free Spin round. Be warned though, when I reviewed this game it took me ages to get it – but then if you are being offered 33 Free Spins, then I guess it would be!

You start with 8 Free Spins, but can then fish for more by choosing which of the ice holes who want to search. Clicking on the ice holes will reel in some more fish, and these will have a bonus attached – either more Free Spins, or a multiplier bonus.
In some ways its probably better to get the multiplier bonuses than it is the Free Spins – personally I reckon that 33 Free Spins at a 2x multiplier probably wont pay out as much as say, 23 Free Spins at an 8x Multplier – but then again, I guess thats the game!
