I have a confession to make – I am just not that into cars. I don’t mind driving them, I don’t even mind looking at (some) of them, but I just cant get excited about them. And when you realise that the theme of Highway Kings is Trucking, and that the symbols are all bits of engine, and that the online slot itself doesn’t have any bells or whistles – or even that the paytable is only half a page – well, my first impressions are to be honest, pretty poor.

Anyway, with this online slot already fighting a losing battle with me, I decided that I should selflessly review this slot in a fair and balanced way. Which is what I will do.

So, lets look at the game itself. Its a 5 reel online slot game with 9 win lines. The reel symbols are all based around Trucking, so you get things like Steering Wheels, Spark Plugs, Pistons etc. And there are a couple of actual Trucks too.

So far, so similar to other online slot games – after all, most online slots fall into one of a few types, and its only the graphics and the bonus features that make them different. Which is why Highway Kings isn’t just a basic slot game, but its a very wierd one too.

You start off by playing Highway Kings like you would do any other online slot – select the number of lines that you want to play and the amount that you want to bet per line,  then hit the Spin button and try to match symbols running from left to right on the reels.

Except that this doesn’t happen with Highway Kings.

Looking at the paytable, the game describes the wins as being the number of “hits” on a win line. Now when I played the game I was a little confused as to what the meant. However, having played the game, it means that you DONT HAVE TO GET THE SYMBOLS ON THE WINLINE IN ORDER FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.

Have a look at the screen shot above – You can see three pistons that have markers around them. This is the win. So you don’t have to get the matching symbols running left to right. Not only that though. There are two win lines in that screen shot. The first I have pointed out to you, and its on winline 7. The other win in that screen shot is the 2 petrol cans on…..line 7.

For the first time that I have ever seen, its actually possible to have 2 wins on one win line, and I cant decide if this is incredibly cool, or just really really confusing.

There are also a couple of other symbols that will help you win. The first is the Exhaust Pipe symbol (yes, it IS glamourous…) get some of these anywhere on the reels and you will win between 2 and 100x your line bet. The other symbol is a big red truck. This acts as a Wild symbol *and* also pays out in its own right.

Highway Kings Progressive Jackpot

Finally, there is the “Dollar Ball” option. Toggling the Dollar Ball button at the top right of the play area will turn this option on or off, and it initiates your change to win a progressive jackpot. Playing this way will put a Dollar Ball symbol into the reels, and getting a combination of these reels will reward a payout – get one Dollar Ball symbol and win 1x your line bet, but get 5 of them and win the Progressive Jackpot!

Now, I’ve read this review back, because as I wrote it, it didn’t seem to make much sense. And it still doesn’t. In my mind, Highway Kings, is an overcomplicated slot that is trying too hard to make the most of its limited features.
