Of all the online slot games to feature Marvel comic book superheroes, I guess that the X Men would have been the most obvious choice – plenty of characters to use as reel symbols, each with a special power  – should translate into the online gaming world with relative ease.

Or so you would have thought. The impression that I got when firing up this slot game was just how *dull* it looks. Not only are the colours muted (some kind of blue background for the Good XMen and a purple background for the Bad XMen) but the actual reel symbols themselves arent amazingly drawn – why they didn’t use images from the Film series or associated spin offs I don’t know.

Anyway, what the X Men slot game lack in visual appeal it makes up for in features. Played out over 25 win lines across 5 reels, the idea is the same as it is in all online slots. Choose the number of lines to play (and as there are Scatter wins available I suggest that you always play the maximum number of lines) and then the amount that you want to wager per line. The total amount that you will be betting per spin is shown in the Total Bet box – make sure that you always play within your means – and when you are comfortable with the amount pressing the Spin buttons starts the game.

The idea of the game is to match reel symbols running from left to right on a winline as you would do any other slot machine. The more symbols that you match then the more money you will win. The winnings are calculated as multiples of your line bet, and you can have more than one win per spin.

XMen  also has another way that you can win on the reels. If you manage to get 5 Good Xmen in an X shape on reels 2, 3 and 4 then you will win 5x your Total Bet. The screen shot explains it way better than I can explain it, and to be honest its a feature that whilst it comes in fairly often, is one that you wont be looking out for as your eyes naturally scan from left to right across the reels.

There are a couple of other reels symbols to help you increase the chance of winning. The first of these is a helpfully labelled “Wild” symbol. This does exactly as it says on the tin and substitutes for any other reel symbol (apart from the Scatter ones) to help you get multiple line wins. Multiple line wins are A Good Thing.

The other is the actual XMen symbol. Get three of these anywhere on the reels and you will trigger the bonus round. And the bonus round is pretty interesting…

You start the Free Spins round with unlimited Free Spins. Yes thats right – unlimited Free Spins! In this phase only the Good XMen appear as well as the Wild symbol. The reels will spin and you accumulate wins. All is good in the world of the XMen slot game.

However, there is an additional reel symbol that will appear – it also acts as a Wild symbol but also changes the screen from the Good XMen to the Bad X Men. When this happens you have 8 spins left unless the Extra Wild symbol spins in. If it does, then the screen goes back to the Good XMen and your unlimited Free Spins continue.

This happens until you have gone over to the Bad Xmen Free Spins and your 8 Free Spins run out. At this point the Free Spins round will end and you go back to the main game. I found this to be quite brilliant and generated about 40 Free Spins and won over 600x my stake!
