Set amongst a suitably sci-fi background, the Star Trek online slot almost flatters to deceive when you first load it up. The graphics are tremendous – shiny faithful reproductions of some of the characters from the 2009 movie are used as the reel symbols and everything about it looks incredibly professional.

Its just too *dark*. You play the game like you do with all online slot games – match up the symbols on the reels running from left to right on a win line and depending on which symbols (and how many) you match you will win a multiplier of your line stake. Remember though that you line stake will be multiplied by however many lines you are playing (and there are 30 here so make sure that you play them all so you maximise your chances of getting those wins), so start out by choosing a line stake that suits you. So a 30p line stake will cost you £3 to play all 30 lines.

There is also a Wild Symbol that will appear on the reels. This substitutes for all other symbols apart from the “Bonus” symbols. These Wild Symbols will help you to make up multiple line wins and swell your bank balance.

So far, so online slot game. Where the Star Trek Online slot scores heavily though is its use of bonus rounds. There are four in all and each are named after one of the more recognisable characters in the film; Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Uhura.

You get these Bonus rounds by spinning in three matching Bonus Round Symbols, or by spinning in two Bonus Round symbols and then a third one that has the face of the character on it. There are five bonus symbols altogether.

The first is a reel symbol depicting the Starship Enterprise. The other four are reel symbols that have the face of one of the four main characters under it and the word “Bonus”. So, if you spin in two Starship Enterprise symbols and one Kirk bonus symbol you will trigger the Captain Kirk Bonus round. Like wise the character on the symbols that trigger the bonus round will launch that particular characters bonus round – its sounds more complicated than it is really! Triggering the bonus rounds also pays you a Scatter win of 3x your line wager.

Captain Kirk Bonus Round

Hitting the Captain Kirk bonus round finds you being taken via a video cut scene to the Transporter Room where you choose one of three Transporters. This selection will show you how many Free Spins you get. Well, I say Free Spins, but they are actually Win Spins. Because Kirk himself “doesn’t believe in no-win scenarios” and Free Spin that doesn’t win you money is discounted, meaning that you keep playing until you have had your designated number of Winning Spins.

All wins are paid out at a 3x multiplier, and as well as the usual Wild Symbol, their is an additional Kirk/Spock symbol that will substitute for either of those two characters to help you win. Spinning in three Bonus symbols will pay you an additional money prize as well as giving you a random number of additional Win Spins. When we played this we won over £8000 on this round!

 Lieutenant Commander Spock Bonus Round

“Prepare to be emotionally compromised”. This is probably the best line I have ever seen on an online slot game (or anywhere, actually!) and heralds the introduction of the Spock bonus round. Imagine just saying that next time you are in a pub – “prepare to be emotionally compromised…..”

You are taken to the Transporter Room and asked to pick a holodeck. This will give you the number of Free Spins that you are going to get.

You will be given anywhere between 10 and 15 Free Spins and in this bonus round the Spock Symbol is also Wild, giving you two Wild Symbols. Any win that involves Captain Kirk is paid at a 2x multiple and you can also trigger additional spins if you manage to get three “Bonus” symbols to appear on the reels.

 Lieutenant Commander Uhura Bonus Round

This bonus round is all about the Scatters. When you trigger the round you are again taken to the Transporter Room to select one holodeck and receive between 6-12 Free Spins. Although the Free Spins will pay out as normal and the Wild Card does come into play as usual and you can retrigger more Free Spins, as I said – this round is all about the Scatters.

Get three or more Scattered Uhura symbols anywhere across the reels and you will win a multiplier bonus – and the more you get the higher the multiplier. It starts off at a 2x multiplier win if you get three Scatter symbols all the way up to an incredible 250x if you get 8 – and bearing in mind that there are 15 reel positions, this is more than possible!

Lieutenant Commander Scott Bonus Round

As anyone who ever watched an episode of Star Trek will testify, Scotty is forever “giving it all he’s got” and when you trigger his bonus feature you will again be taken to the transporter room to pick a holodeck. This will give you your initial win multiplier.
